So I was doing some mapping on my Alcatraz map and I ran into a problem. Anytime in-game if I press the Esc key my game crashes. I didn't add anythink script-wise I just added some stairs and a new info_volume. Both of which work fine. Anyone know what could cause this? I get no console error it just crashes.  :'(

Yea I tried playing other maps and they work fine. I even tried playing this map on my laptop and it works fine. I can press Escape and no crash. What could it be? I literally just added a few things and never touched any files. lol I'm open for suggestions though.  :-[

No not yet. I'm definitely gonna have to though because my laptop ran it at 15 fps and my desktop ran it at 45 fps. I've never really done portaling so I'm kinda of worried I may break something. I'll have to watch some of Blackjack Johnnies tutorials.

i have this problem before, try to use more caulk and portals, also it can be a big brush that is making the error.

Its trying to draw a lot of surfaces, resulting in crash, as seen in console. Portaling should fix this issue

Hey guys It's been a while since I made this post but I've been working hard on portaling my Alcatraz map and have had no luck.  :'(  I watched a ton of videos such as BlackjackJonnys but I can't get the portals to work in my Alcatraz map. It's easy to do in square test maps. I portaled several areas in my test maps. I just can't figure out how to portal my huge Alcatraz map. Think Mob of the Dead layout, that's what my map is like.

So how would you go about portaling MOTD if you were given the .map file? I tried breaking the map up into sections such as "docks", "spiral tunnel", "citadel tunnels", "cell blocks", "wardens office", and "cafeteria". I then boxed them in with the yellow portal tex (also tried caulk texture as well) and put the blue portal tex in the doorway's. I got no leaks or errors and I left some walls Calked so I could see if the portals were working and they don't. I can still see the sections of the map that are supposed to not be loaded.  :'( 

I'm coming to you guys for help now because my map has gotten even bigger and now will not even load. It crashes to the desktop with the same error as before when I pressed Esc. Believe it or not I actually have the map under the engine limits  :) If I can get these portals to work I will be set. The bad thing is that my map is so large it takes 40+ minutes to compile so It's hard to trial and error test my portals. I get maybe 2-3 tries and the day is gone.  :'(

Any Ideas?

You don't need to do this to test portals, you can see them if you type developer 1 then r_showportals 1 and they will show up in game like this -



Also if you just want to test portals, untick lights and reflections and it'll speed up compiling a ton.

I've tried the r_showportals 1 and can see the portals just like your image but I must be doing it wrong. Do you portal around every corner that is out of site? Or do you section off larger chunks/areas of your map and portal them? I know it depends on the map probably but I'm trying to learn the easiest/fastest way possible. I really want to finish Alcatraz by the end of summer.   

Also thanks for telling me about unticking lights and reflections. That will hopefully save me hours of time.

So over the weekend codmoddd1234 taught me how to portal which was hard as nuts due to my map being off-grid and mapped in .25 and .5 grid-size.  :-[  (This was my first map and I've added to it over the years so I learned as I went along) BUT! I got the major areas portaled such as the cell blocks and docks.

Unfortunately my game still crashes when I press Esc.

Also I tried adding my PaP area into the map and the game crashes while loading. So does anyone have an idea on how to fix this issue? If not I can't really finish the ending of the map.  :'(  I've tried deleting lots of models but I still get the error/crash.

codmoddd1234 thinks it crashes because when you press esc it loads the best lod version of all models and has a blur effect. Same thing happens when you scope, all models switch to the best quality lod.
Its prob switching all models when you press esc and using too much memory.

I have no clue how to fix that if that is the problem. lol

Have you tried removing the things you added in radiant before it started crashing? If not, give it a try. Make a backup first of course, would be unecessary to remove the things you added if it still crashes.
