Anything over 50,000 in my opinion is way too much. If you watched NGT play your map they pretty much said forget it as soon as they saw the 300,000 ending, and they are pretty committed to doing almost anything the mapper throws at them. That being said the common player doesn't have that much of a tolerance and will probably say forget it to anything over 75,000(that is not a reason to make it 75,000).

Buyable endings are no fun in my opinion. I'd very much like to see an objective based ending like in 420 instead.

I usually make mine between 30k-50k. Like Saje said anything over 50k is not worth it, and anything under 30k is too easy. So 30k-50k is the right price. You have to make it tough for the players but you cant go overboard.

This kind of discussion comes up every now and again at romhacking.

The key here is balance. You can't play through your own levels and expect everyone to play them. Best idea is to have an inexperienced player have a crack at your map and take note when and where they get frustrated with and balance accordingly.

With that said, I never go for expensive endings, convoluted easter eggs are not worth my time either.

Why not just make your map so gosh-darn fun to play through that saving up for an ending wouldn't even be necessary because the map itself would provide you with all the satisfaction you need. Running around saving points only makes you stay in a map longer than necessary. If a person wants to spend hours in a map saving money they can already do that in any map already but it shouldn't be made a requirement for completing a map - at least not anymore. Those maps had their day, but that is not the day we live in now.
