when I drag tanims (ai animation) onto my zombie in maya I get "unrecognized file type"

Do you have Toms tanim tool? Without that, you can't just drop a tanim.
If you do have and you are sure that you've installed it right, then check in the "window" tab of maya and go to "settings/preferences" then click, "plug-in-manager". now check if the tanim tool is checked there.

is it bad I have maya 2014 Student version? I see them in plugin manager but cant use them

Pretty sure it only works with 2012 and lower when looking at the plugin name, I've tried it on 2013 without success. You can get the student version of 2012 through a quick google search. Unless anyone else has managed to get it working with a newer version then by all means specify how.

Yes, you could download the free student trial of maya 2012. You can download it here (You have to create an Autodesk account)
