or rename the material you have just converted to "scope_overlay_mp.iwi" and include it in your mod, iv never had to add it to weapon file or csv
You should never be overriding default images.

And you don't need to add the material name to your mod.csv anyway, it's loaded by the weapon file.

Why not? Putting them in your mod only is fine, even your raw if you don't plan on ever using the stock version again. But for this I'd recommend not doing what Scotch said since that would only allow for one unique overlay. And you don't need to add the material name to your mod.csv anyway, it's loaded by the weapon file.
materials aren't loaded by weapon file (i.e. scopeMaterials) and overriding default materials is a general no-no why do you want to replace them when you can create your own anyway. You can save 1 measly asset count but what's the point?
