Hi, I'm Rezirex. I don't have much of an introduction, so I've decided to disregard the introductions forum.

The ability to create my own content for material I am passionate about has always intrigued me. I would like to get into the Zombies modding community, albeit without any prior knowledge on the subject. My ideas are restricted by the limitations of my abilities, if that makes sense.

It would be helpful if anyone was to point me in the right direction. I'd like to know where I can get basic help how using Radiant. Here are some basic questions I have.


  • How did you mappers get into custom zombies, and did you have any prior knowledge?
  • Are there any worthwhile tutorials that explain the basics of map making?
  • What script placer should I use?

Any generally useful information would be much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I had the same reasons to get into custom zombies. I wanted to try how it all works. This was about 2 years ago. I had no prior knowledge about map making, I didn't even understand much of PC's...  I started surfing the web, and followed some tutorials. One of these tutorials are made by ZK (Zomb1e-kllr). These can be found here!. I also followed tutorials from MegaHackerzzzzz, but unfortunately he removed his videos from his channel.

The blender thing you linked won't work with CoD5. There are separate exporters for CoD5 format. I believe there's a blender exporter for CoD5 as well, but Autodesk Maya is mostly used as 3D modelling program and so also mostly used for exporting. The plugin for maya i'm talking about can be found here! Tutorials on how to export a model to CoD5 can be found all over on Google :D

And about the Script Placer (SP), there are some SP's on the internet. UGX, Script Placer Z and MrHankeys SP are the most famous ones. I would recommend UGX (you don't have to install the mod!). If UGX doesn't work for me, i always use MrHankeys SP (V1.3!!). But this is just a basic one, and doesn't include any features. Script Placer Z though has working BO1 perks in his script placer. So it totally depends on what you want to do with your map.

Hey welcome! :)  I'm fairly new here myself and still wanting to learn more about mapping and scripting. I've got the basics down and am starting to delve into th more complex stuff now lol. I, also, got into this for the same reason, and the only knowledge I had, (apart from being very fluent with computers) is a ton of experience with cfg amd config files and only a small bit of understanding of COD script. Anyway, I hope to see you start making some maps and stuff and (even though I'm not very experienced yet) I can try to help if I am able to. :)

I'd like to use Blender as I have a very basic understanding of how to use it, and Maya isn't very affordable for an amateur like myself.

I found a wiki, but I'm not sure if that is what I'm looking for. Does anyone have experience using Blender for WaW?

You can get a free 3-year student license. This way you can use maya (i would recommend 2012) without being charged for it. you can request one here!

The thing you linked might work, but i'm not experienced in blender.

Welcome to UGX! First of all, I would like to thank you for using proper English and using good vocabulary/punctuation in your posts. I get so tired of people typing like Iliterate 8 year olds.

I got started making maps by watching custom zombies videos on youtube and thinking; "Hey, I wanna do that." I had almost no prior knowledge about scripting, mapping,  or modeling, and I would not be where I am today without ZK's tutorials and help from UGX. I encourage you to learn a lot and don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't get frustrated if you get errors. If it's something you come to love and enjoy, stick with it and you will go a long way. Good luck ;)

A few years ago, I became very passionate about Mario platformer modding. Although that is obviously a completely different universe, I was able to learn my way around the games' tools by viewing other peoples' levels and interacting with pre-made content.

So, basically I'm asking if there is a way to open community made maps in Radiant.

No, you can't open other peoples maps unless you got the real .map file. There are ways to export all script entities (there's a program which puts all script_models and such into a map file), but i've never seen a program which can export a complete map from WAW.

I do think people should give out .map files if someone asks politely and they can be trusted. I will gladly give out any .map files i've made to anyone who asks, just don't have anything released so nobody can ask.
