in the first mission, your best friend dies, I didn't care anything about it. And then they actually put in a sequence where you are at the funeral for your friend that you didn't know anything about? I would care if they told more about him and have more missions with him.
I can see what you are saying a little bit, but how much table setting do you want them to do? They talked about you & Will Irons during the intro and then you proceed to do a mission together where he gets killed. The story isn't about you and Will, it's about everything that happens after that and his death is really just used to fuel the rage of Jonathan Irons. The story doesn't hinge on your attachment to Will so I fail to see why we'd need anymore relationship building than they already gave us.
The BO3 story is presented to you in such a way that it sounds like I tried to explain the movie Inception to my 95 year old grandma with Alzheimers who then tried to explain it to the rest of the slumped over brain dead shufflers in the nursing home and then someone wrote down what one of them thought the movie was about - and there you have the BO3 story.
But this is all my opinion.
