in the polygons tab, use these two buttons. Red one to seperate meshes and the green one to combine them again after that..

When i do this it will make from one mesh to 2 meshes (mag/gun)
Well, that's what you wanted right? It depends on the model on how it gets seperated, some models only have one or two meshes and others have tons of them.
Because my pic was taken in maya2012 and you use 8.5 it might looks a bit different, but just look for the buttons named 'seperate' and 'combine'.
For 'seperate':
-select the model
-press the button
-it will be seperated in an x number of meshes
For 'combine':
-select the meshes you want to combine all at the same time
-press the button
The tool does not look like a pencil as far as i know, it's prob the wrong tab/button you are using..
