Also, make sure codexporttools.py is in the same folder and you usersetup.mel has the correct lines.

python("import CoDMayaTools");i dont know how to do that. all the things with maya are very distant to me and i also have the 2014 version so pretty much all of the tutorials for it are for 2016.

I assume you're using Aidan's since if I am not mistaken this is the only I know of plug-in/script for exporting/importing that will work with 2014.
Make sure the .py file is put in Documents\maya\mayaversion\scripts and add this to your usersetup.mel:
After that it should work.
There only difference between 2016 and 2014 is UI Design, everything is in the same place and virtually the same, a tutorial on let's say Maya 8.5 would be very much relevant to someone using 2014.
