A lot of people (myself included) are waiting to skip 8 entirely and go straight to 9 or whatever the newest one is called. Same thing happened with Vista when XP came out - most tried to stay on XP in hopes of skipping straight to 7 to avoid dealing with Vista.
Yeah, I have heard a lot of people suggesting this same thing. Again, I have no real problem with it myself. It is definitely NO Vista. lol.
For me, my frustration comes when I have to figure out how to get to certain settings that they moved or renamed from Windows 7, or try to troubleshoot a Windows 8 problem over the phone and not being able to walk them through each window because the UI has changed so drastically.
As much as I agree, I unfortunately cannot see them reverting back on the UI. The world is rapidly moving to a touch screen based operation of computers, laptops and tablets. The UI is obviously an early, "prototype" attempt at a proper touch screen OS.
It's like the original Wii. It is innovative until you actually use it. I agree that Windows 9 (Wii U) will be a technically superior OS, but expect the UI to be very similar to it's current state.
Regarding the metro (start) screen. I hate it personally, but with 8.1, you can set it to boot straight to desktop, avoiding the pointless unless using a tablet, metro screen altogether. For desktop use, I have not had a single issue with anything I have done so far. I managed to get Grim Fandango to run first time on Win8, and a quick Google search will show it proved impossible on Win 7 (all versions). I also ran several older games and programs that gave me a lot of issues with Win 7 and again, they ran fine.
All I am saying is that I personally have found it to be technically sound, even though the UI is a complete joke.
