Really devs?  WTF is that?  There is smack talk and then there is perpetuating the stereotype that gamers are all homophobic, misogynistic, racist twelve year olds with an infantile and tribalistic worldview.  When you put this kind of language out there for mass consumption, you remind everyone of the context surrounding the tech field, programming, and recreational gaming.  Namely, that it's full of worthless, sexually stunted and socially stymied men who will make death threats against anyone who disagrees with them about a comic book. 

This kind of juvenile "humor" sets gamers back a long ways, especially when it's developers doing it and not just the girl-voiced 6th grader on xbox live who has too much wrong with him to bother contemplating.

Is there anyone here who would like to restore my faith in humanity and say they are also upset when they see hate speech casually bandied about for the amusement of the privileged, opinionated, and profoundly ignorant prepubescent mind?

FYI:  I am a straight white male adult.  Not that it should matter.  And its people like me who need to start calling out this kind of crap in one of the last socially acceptable arenas to act like a 19th century know-nothing party member: first person shooters.

First of all, its a long running joke. The premise of the joke is that heterosexuals prefer not to be called homosexuals. By stating that people that hit this button are homosexuals, it jokingly tries to get people to not hit the quit button since a majority of people are heterosexual and a majority of heterosexuals prefer not to be called homosexuals.

There is nothing ignorant within the joke itself. Is it juvenile humour? Sure. It's the creators map. Creative expression. He thought it would be funny to put that in there. Was it? Yes. Does a homosexual look at that and get offended? Can't say, but I doubt it.

But branding that as hate speech? Perpetuating that all gamers are homophobic misogynicstic whatevers? That's your fault. I make that kind of humour all the time. I'll make the occasional black person watermelon joke, women can't drive joke, etc. but I'm not racist nor sexist and people that know me know that I'm not racist nor sexist. It makes people laugh. Who the hell cares?

Sorry, I hate people that victimize themselves. Not to mention that the implications that he's making exist only because people like him are making them.

Pretty sure it was a custom map you were playing, so it was down to the individual person who made that map and not Treyarch, yes?

I understand your stance but this is kids who are making these maps and that is there sense of humour.  There is little you can do except maybe just not play that particular map.

Well, in that case maybe not kids responsible but all the same it is all in fun. I don't really think it is a major issue. I understand the OP's concerns but you have to draw a line somewhere under all this "political correctness".

Again, if it offends the OP then don't play the map. Complaining about it is a bit much in my own personal opinion.

I'm sorry I came off a little strong.  With a clearer head, I could have attempted to engage the gaming community in a dialogue.  Sadly, an emotional response prevailed.

I am not a victim in this.  I am someone who is part of a community of individuals who express themselves in a myriad ways.  Many of them have been abused or harmed physically and/or emotionally due to prevailing ethnocentrism, casual racism, or direct acts of hate.  As someone who has the credibility of NOT being a target or a victim, I have a responsibility not to be complicit.  I do not need to be mansplained about "the joke."  I get it.  I am simply upset by it for the reasons I outlined.

There is a prevailing culture in the gaming community of a lot of bad things.  UGX seems to be the developer of the official UGX map I was playing and are responsible for the things they wrote.  I find their flippant use of homophobic language to be incredibly disappointing at a time when gamers are in the spotlight for just this kind of behavior. And when I read that such behavior would be excoriated on their own forums, I found that hypocrisy infuriating.

To those who would say that racism or sexism or the social ostracism de jours exists only because people point it out, I would link you to wikipedia's article on circular reasoning.  Additionally, the overwhelming data from myriad reputable institutions on the existence and tacit persistence of these unfortunate -ism's in everything from hiring practices to homocides.

P.S. the racist and sexist jokes you make are racist and sexist.  You might not be a klan member, but a thousand "innocent" jokes augment the socially acceptable practice of marginalizing people based on gender, sex, race, ethnicity, and creed.  If you think that kind of stuff is okay, there is little I can due to dissuade you other than vehemently oppose your point of view and continue to push back on the notion that "it's not a big deal."  The broader ramifications of complicity against marginalizing people are vast and reprehensible.  Hence my post.

Where is the line between a simple joke and hardcore predjudice? Are you saying that someone adding a line in jest poking fun at someone leaving a game early is full blown homophobia?

It was CLEARLY meant as a joke. The map maker does not genuinely think you are a homosexual if you decide to leave the game early. Sorry if you feel it does though.
