Was wondering if it was actually legal to port it with student edition.

On the website it all says you can't use it for Profit / Commercial Use and some others.
Including if someone takes the asset and uses for there own use.

But lots of people seem to use it so I don't really know if it is.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Autodesk isn't going to export models from your Call of Duty mod and check to see what version of the program you used. You can't sell your mods or use them for commercial use anyway so I don't understand the question.

We're a bunch of modders, I doubt they'll care as long as you're not profiting (as in money) off the stuff.

they couldn't work out which program was used anyway

Once it's compiled in to xmodel export it is no longer anything to do with maya

They would only be able to find out if it's watermarked - even then unless your profiting they won't care
