I have had this problem for awhile now. I do gun textures with normals/specs/cosines, but I need to add color detail to some.
I apply it and for some reason some parts of gun turns completely black. Some parts I have been able to fix by making new material without color detail, but I would need to use Maya to fix other parts and I dont want to do that :S

So at first check that all Texturea havent an Alpha Channel. And i think you know the detail normal map? The Normal map is pink and violet and the detail normal too but is smaller than the normal map.

Detail normal is not used in guns. And Im pretty sure alpha doesnt affect this. I will test, when I get home

Edit: Yep, as I said, alpha didnt affect that
