and the plugin is there i looked over and over again

Well it says it can't find the plugin so you probably haven't installed the plugin correctly. Make sure its done correctly in the maya script and setup files that were stated needed to be edited in the tutorial.

No it isn't. You set the color set for the mesh to blank white to stop it from being black by going to color>apply color and clicking the box beside to ensure that the shade is set to blank white.
