Title: Square Shadows?
Post by: FreeFall on September 14, 2014, 10:48:55 pm
So I have this problem in my map and don't know what is causing the shadows to appear square.
All my graphic settings are all maxed out.
I do have a lightgrid volume+lightgrid sky, worldspawn settings, and caulk box around my map.

It appears on all ported models

Also appears on normal brushes

Any ideas?

The inside faces of the caulk box need to be a sky texture. Just pick whatever sky texture matches your skybox closest.

Already did that before I posted this.

Select the brush face.
Press shift "L"(to show "LMAP" view).
Press "s"
set "sample scale" to 8 or 4.
Less equals smaller squares for your long shadows ingame.
Press ok and then shift L twice to go back to normal view.

Also cut the brush in 2 if its large.

Ok, that worked for brushes, but what about on custom models?

Take a closer look at the toilet, bulldozer, utility truck and container in the first picture

Yeah the shadows on the models look fine to me there, unless you are still talking about the shadows casting on the ground from the models.

shadows look square-ish from a certain distance in game no matter what you do. it's probably an engine thing.

Correct

Models do this also, if you notice, player models etc have 4 LODs, you see the one depending on how far away you are from it

Even very close up to the models, this square shadow appears , I'll try and tweak the LOD distance numbers in asset manager and see if that works.
